4 Keys & 5 Questions to hiring the right Photographer/Film Maker

Posted by Peter Clayman on Tue, Jan 20, 2015 @ 04:21 PM

So you just got engaged...congrats to you and yours! Now its time pick your wedding date and select a venue. Once those items have been squared away most people will now start working on selecting the various vendors (photo, video, DJ, band, florist, etc) that are needed. One of the first things people take care is the photography and video. So you jump online and do some quick research and schedule the face to face appointments.

bride and groom

So many times couples have come into the studio and have said the following things to me: “your our first meeting so we don't know what to ask”, “we've never done this before (being married), so we don't know what we should ask or say”...although those are fair statements...my strong recommendation to you is be prepared to have a consultation before the actual consultation.

4 steps to take before your consultation:

Before going into a consultation with a photographer/videographer make sure that:

1. you have seen their work and love it – from their website, Facebook and Pinterest

2. Read up on any reviews...what do other couples think of the company

3. Set a budget – What is your balance between the investment and the importance of quality work

4. Have an idea of what you are looking for in terms of coverage and final product. Are you looking to keep things basic (just the files) or are you looking for albums, canvases, etc. The more focused you are the easier it will be to find the right person or company for you.

Once your at the consultation:

5 real world questions to ask during the meeting -

1. What happens in case of an emergency? Specifically what are your emergency plans? - this is important to know the company you are dealing with has thought this out and has a logical plan. If the company doesn't have a solid plan, they may not be the right one for you.

2. If photo and video come from different companies how do you work together? - I always tell people you have 1 aisle to walk down and 1 aisle to walk back and you have at least 2 people trying to get the shot...it helps if photo and video have worked together many times and can work in harmony

3. What is your turn around time for delivering the photos and video after the wedding? - Asking this will help manage your expectations on when things are delivered.

4. Have you shot at my venue and if not please tell me how you would prepare yourself for our wedding? This will help you gain some insight into experience and planning

5. How do you manage the actual day of our wedding? What is your style for managing the day? - This will help you understand the demeanor of the person or company taking the images and does that fit your personality and get the job done.

I hope this helps you out...any questions please send me a message at pclayman@nhimages.com or call 603.566.7911. Enjoy the journey of planning for your special day :)

Kara & Derek ~ Dell-Lea Weddings & Events ~ Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Mon, Nov 10, 2014 @ 12:33 PM

Kara & Derek were married on a crisp fall day at the very scenic Dell-Lea in Chichester, NH.  Kara & Derek have this amazing energy about them and their love runs incredibly deep so it was an honor to witness and document their special day.

So when it came to photos, we covered everything from basic bridal preparation all the way through the reception.  They also did a first reveal so that we could get most if not all the pictures done ahead of time.

bridal prep

Here are some of the image from our intial session :)

As you can see there is just an amazing free spirit about both of them...

The ceremony was light hearted and fun with Kara and her Dad walking down the isle...even though Kara & Derek had already seen each other you can just see him beaming from ear to ear...one of the really cool aspects of the ceremony was that both Kara & Derek did their vows seemingly together.  Usually its one person goes first then the other...but in this case they mixed it up nicely...very well done :)

wedding ceremony

after the ceremony we were able to do some fun bridal party pics along with some additional photos of Kara & Derek :)

bride and groom

The reception included the introductions, and a high energy first dance along with speeches and toasts...one of the bridesmaids was celebrated for coming to the wedding all the way from China! There was fun and dancing all night long...we wish Kara and Derek all the best and happiness in the world!

Amanda & Brad - Stonewall Farm - Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Fri, Oct 17, 2014 @ 06:12 PM

Amanda & Brad were married at one of the more scenic rustic place to get married Stonewall Farm, Keene, NH.

wedding venue

We had a chance to get to know Amanada & Brad before the wedding by doing their engagement images and what we learned is they are an easy going fun loving couple who just happen to appreciate great photography...near and dear to our heart! :) We covered the day from the bride and groom getting ready through the early part of the reception.

bride and groom

One of the many things we appreciated is that Amanda & Brad had a nice manageable bridal party consisting of 1 maid of honor and 1 best man...and that was it...I know, I know having 10 on each side is fun, but its nice to see something more intimate from time to time.

The ceremony had an awesome fall foiliage background and was performed by a good friend of the bride and groom...even one of the readings had a personal connection with Brad's mom filling that role.

After the ceremony we were able to get these photos:)

We loved the open concept of the reception room as we captured the first dance, toasts and parent dances.  Erin our day of coordinator did a great job of keeping this in order and we want to wish Amanda & Brad all the happiness in the world!!

Mikelle & Kyle - Dexter's Inn Sunapee, NH - Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Wed, Sep 10, 2014 @ 02:09 PM

Mikelle & Kyle were married at one of the most scenic venues we have been to in a while Dexter's Inn, Sunapee, NH.  It was also a crazy weather day in which it started out hot and muggy then ended with some pretty sizable thunderstorms.

bride and groom

This place had it all from spacious rooms and cabins for bridal preparation to an awesome ceremony location with amazing views of the mountains and a tent to host the reception.

wedding ceremony

The original plan was for Mikelle & Kyle to see each other for the first time as Mikelle walked down the isle, but after reflecting on the weather situaiton (and realizing there was a 75% chance of rain at the start of the ceremony) the decision was made to do a first reveal and get the pictures done before the rain came.  It would later turn out to be a great decision.

So we started with bridal preparations and getting detail shots of the dress, shoes, jewlery and it lead to some nice candid moments as things were unfolding.

The first reveal was done close to the ceremony spot for some great background pics.  Even though it was bright and sunny that would later change quickly.

Here are some of the images we took as we walked around the grounds.  One of the places we were able to get some amazing images was by this little church located on the property in the woods a little bit.

The rain held off and the ceremony was intimate and featured some readings along with a winebox ceremony.  This is where the bride and groom write notes to each other ahead of the ceremony and seal them with a bottle of wine to be opened 1 year later (some couples can go even further such as 5 years)

We were able to get all the family photos and bridal photos in just ahead of the reception...then the heavens opened up.

The reception included the introductions, first dance, toasts, cake cutting and parent dances.  Mikelle and Kyle commissioned artist Alison Vernon to paint a scene within the first dance which was such a neat idea and I highly recommend it.  Beyond that Sean Reardon from Get Down Tonight Entertainment had everyone dancing throughout the day and the head of Dexter's Inn, John did a great job keeping things organized throughout the day.  We wish Mikelle and Kyle all the best and happiness they can have as a married couple!

Tammy & Chris - Common Man Inn - Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Wed, Sep 03, 2014 @ 05:52 PM

Tammy & Chris were married on a humid Sunday at a unique venue in Plymouth, NH called The Common Man Inn.  The reason why I say its unique is that one of the ceremony location options is in an actual greenhouse which gave it a really nice intimate feel for the ceremony.  There are also miles of railroad tracks which make for some great backdrop for pictures.

bride and groom

We started off by photographing bridal preparations.  During this time we usually get detail shots of the dress, shoes, jewlery which we did, but there was one twist.  Tammy is a big time runner who has done marathons and half marathons and in fact Tammy and I ran the Dopey Challange at Disney last January which was a 48.6 mile race over 4 days (in case your curious its a 5k, 10k, half marathon, full marathon).  So Tammy's shoes were actually custom running shoes that said "run disney"on the side.

So everyone got ready in a building they call cabin in the woods which all the bridesmaids and the adorable flower girl got ready.  At the very end of the preperation Tammy walked downstairs and we had her dad close his eyes until she reached the bottom of the stairs for some very sweet reactions.

One of the greatest things we love to capture is the grooms look as he sees his bride walking down the isle for the first time, but in this case the grooms mom had a pretty solid look as well! The ceremony was traditional with one extra part in which Tammy & Chris exchanged roses and then gave them to their mothers :)

After the ceremony the pictures flowed and here are some of what we were able to get.

The reception featured introductions, first dance, parent dances, cake cutting (cake was fromOoo La La Creative Cakes) and dancing...Megan from Main Event Entertainment had everyone dancing all night long and they provided the photo booth as well.  Stephanie & Megan from the Inn did a great job in getting everything in order so all in all it was a great day...oh and the rain held off...bonus!  We wish the happy couple all the very best in life!
