3 Things I learned from my blended family wedding

Posted by Peter Clayman on Fri, Apr 24, 2015 @ 10:13 PM

On Feb 21, 2015 I married the love of my life Holly and it was a packaged deal. Holly was previously married and has 2 great kids ages 5 and 7. I was previously married before and have a total of 3 kids who range in age from 6 to 15.

Our wedding day was great, but getting there wasn't always smooth. This was not just a wedding for us, but a wedding for our whole family and we wanted to include the kids throughout the ceremony and celebration. My thoughts were as such...Will the kids get ready without a fight? Will the youngest ones going to make a scene in the middle of the ceremony...will they dump our unity sand all over the place and have a sand fight...will we get any family pictures that we could look back on and say...hey we kinda look good in pictures (especially for pictures since I am a professional photographer). The answer to all of that is that reality ended up being awesome. So through this process I have learned 3 things from my blended family wedding that I would like to share with you.

  1. Relay your thoughts, feelings and concerns to your wedding vendors. You hired professionals for a reason and they will help you keep things in check. Many times I have seen (when I am shooting a wedding) where the kids will listen to me more than a parent and it works out fine.

  2. Enjoy the day! If you enjoy the day your kids will enjoy the day and that goes for everything in life...kids will follow (whether we like it or not) the attitude that is given off by the adults.

  3. Let it go (in my best frozen singing voice)! If the kids scream, cry, barf, disobey let it go (yes all of that did happen with us)...its about the union of us as well as our families.

Bethany & Adam ~ Hotel Portsmouth ~ Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Mon, Dec 22, 2014 @ 04:06 PM

Bethany & Adam were married a few weeks ago near the heart of downtown Portsmouth, NH at a cozy place called The Hotel Portsmouth. It was an intimate wedding (which we love) with just very close family attending.

We started out doing just a touch of the getting ready then it was off to do a first reveal.  Adam was a little nervous to say the least, and it was a very sweet private moment for the two of them.  Since there was limited time left in terms of daylight we immediately jumped into the car to a nice private area of downtown Portsmouth.  Its right by city hall and we stumbled upon this spot while doing an engagement session earlier this year.  For such a busy little city this area is quiet  and quite picturesque.

Once we got back it was time for the wedding ceremony (once they warmed up :).  One of the moments we relish capturing is the raw emotion just before the ceremony starts...In this case Bethany's dad was sweetly caught up in the moment as they were about to walk down the isle. Once the ceremony started they exchanged vows and rings and after there was a celebratory toast! We wish our happy couple all the best life has to offer.

Kara & Derek ~ Dell-Lea Weddings & Events ~ Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Mon, Nov 10, 2014 @ 12:33 PM

Kara & Derek were married on a crisp fall day at the very scenic Dell-Lea in Chichester, NH.  Kara & Derek have this amazing energy about them and their love runs incredibly deep so it was an honor to witness and document their special day.

So when it came to photos, we covered everything from basic bridal preparation all the way through the reception.  They also did a first reveal so that we could get most if not all the pictures done ahead of time.

Here are some of the image from our intial session :)

As you can see there is just an amazing free spirit about both of them...

The ceremony was light hearted and fun with Kara and her Dad walking down the isle...even though Kara & Derek had already seen each other you can just see him beaming from ear to ear...one of the really cool aspects of the ceremony was that both Kara & Derek did their vows seemingly together.  Usually its one person goes first then the other...but in this case they mixed it up nicely...very well done :)

after the ceremony we were able to do some fun bridal party pics along with some additional photos of Kara & Derek :)

The reception included the introductions, and a high energy first dance along with speeches and toasts...one of the bridesmaids was celebrated for coming to the wedding all the way from China! There was fun and dancing all night long...we wish Kara and Derek all the best and happiness in the world!

Amanda & Brad - Stonewall Farm - Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Fri, Oct 17, 2014 @ 06:12 PM

Amanda & Brad were married at one of the more scenic rustic place to get married Stonewall Farm, Keene, NH.

wedding venue

We had a chance to get to know Amanada & Brad before the wedding by doing their engagement images and what we learned is they are an easy going fun loving couple who just happen to appreciate great photography...near and dear to our heart! :) We covered the day from the bride and groom getting ready through the early part of the reception.

bride and groom

One of the many things we appreciated is that Amanda & Brad had a nice manageable bridal party consisting of 1 maid of honor and 1 best man...and that was it...I know, I know having 10 on each side is fun, but its nice to see something more intimate from time to time.

The ceremony had an awesome fall foiliage background and was performed by a good friend of the bride and groom...even one of the readings had a personal connection with Brad's mom filling that role.

After the ceremony we were able to get these photos:)

We loved the open concept of the reception room as we captured the first dance, toasts and parent dances.  Erin our day of coordinator did a great job of keeping this in order and we want to wish Amanda & Brad all the happiness in the world!!

Danielle & Ryan ~ Harrington Farm ~ Wedding Photography

Posted by Peter Clayman on Wed, Oct 08, 2014 @ 12:02 PM

Danielle & Ryan were married on a picture perfect (pun totally intended) day at St. Mary's Church, Jefferson, MA with the reception at the beautiful Harrington Farm, Princeton, MA.  They utilized our services for both photography and video to which we covered most of the day from bridal preparations through the reception.

bride and groom

We started of by meeting up with Danielle and the bridesmaids at Doubletree Hotel in Leominster, MA.  We photographed all the details and candid moments, but what Danielle wanted to do was a first reveal to her dad.  If you are not familiar with this process its where the father of the bride gets to see his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time.  These images came out absolutely amazing...one of the images you can see Danielle out of the corner with her reflection in the mirror as dad is awaiting...just magical.

As we made our way to St. Mary's Church Danielle and dad took a Rolls Royce and some images from the ceremony:

As we made our way to Harrington Farm we took advantage of the scenery to get some of these images:

The reception had all the makings of a great party.  Lively introductions, first dance, speeches and toasts, cake cutting and then plenty of dancing.  Cindy, the lead coordinator at Harrington Farm made everyone feel welcomed including us :)  We wish Danielle and Ryan all the happiness in the world as a married couple!
